The publication reveals testimonies and unpublished data gathered in the context of the grand structural consolidation and improvement works of the Church of S. In total, more than 300 works of art are presented, examples that allow for a true journey through Portuguese painting from the 16th to the 20th century. Organized chronologically in this inventory, the painting collection of the Misericórdia de Lisboa has unique characteristics, considering that it “was born and grew motivated by the consumption needs of religious imagery over the centuries,” as the author states. The magnificent paintings revealed to readers come from three major collections: that of the Society of Jesus (Church of S. Roque), that of the Convent of S. Pedro de Alcântara, and the core of the Misericórdia de Lisboa. This Volume II includes more than one hundred and fifty paintings originating from the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries. However, few know that this church was the first headquarters, built from scratch, of the Misericórdia de Lisboa and that, due to its location in the Ribeira, it was strongly affected by the earthquake of 1755. It gained new life with the Pombaline reconstruction of 1770, maintaining part of its original facade with the beautiful representation of Mater Ommium or Our Lady of Mercy, who under her mantle protects all of society, acquiring the name of Conceição Velha.
The author tells us the story of these two churches – Conceição Velha and Misericórdia – both conceived during the reign of D. Manuel. The first, belonging to the Order of Christ, called Conceição Velha, which was built on the site of an ancient synagogue; the second, of Misericórdia, belonging to the brotherhood of the same name. After the earthquake, the latter moved to São Roque, in the higher part of the city, and Conceição Velha to the ruins of the old church of Misericórdia. Over time, this change would generate confusions in historiography, and Conceição Velha came to be confused with the church of Misericórdia, being interpreted as a single building. This aspect is demystified in this book, through careful analysis of documentary, iconographic, and archaeological sources and a narrative that brings us the evolution of the church of Misericórdia over time.

Author: Gonçalo de Carvalho Amaro
Illustration: Catarina França | SCML Editorial Center

Year of publication: 2nd edition, 2019
Publisher: SCML
ISBN: 9789898712271

This collection published by the Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Lisboa about its heritage with historical and artistic interest continues with this second volume dedicated to Quinta Alegre, in Camarate, built during the court period. Maria João Madeira Rodrigues clarifies that “the documents and objects traditionally referred to as Signs of the Abandoned refer to a practice of Assistance that, committed to the Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Lisboa since the Royal Charter of 1543, has deepened into a complex process between the anonymity of the individual who entrusts a child to another and the collective entity Misericórdia de Lisboa. The way to identify the Abandoned aiming for a future recovery or the manifestation of an original bond is imprecise and begins with the attachment to the abandoned child of documents or objects that mark its origin.” In this catalog, a total of 69 signs of abandoned children are inventoried, illustrated, summarized, and transcribed. In this publication, Fernando da Silva Correia - an author who has thoroughly researched the life and work of the founder of the Lisbon Mercy, Queen D. Leonor de Lencastre - offers the reader a detailed and appealing account of how “assistance has been viewed in various ways throughout History, and seen in light of many criteria, according to the level of civilization and the social, political, and religious ideas of each people.” This work is structured in four parts: Assistance in Antiquity, Christian Assistance before the 16th century, Assistance in Portugal in the Middle Ages, and finally, the reform of Assistance in Portugal at the end of the 15th century. The reissue of this publication remains highly relevant - it was first published in 1944 and had long been out of print in the book market - providing a solid foundation for today's researchers. An editorial initiative integrated into the 5th Centenary of the Foundation of the Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Lisboa.

Authors: Fernando da Silva Correia

Year of Publication: 1999
Publisher: SCML / Livros Horizonte

ISBN@: 9789899021983
Format: ePub
To read ePub files, access the App Store on your computer or mobile phone and download an “ebook reader” application.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0563/4021/7943/files/9722410644_OrigenseFormacaodasMisericordias.jpg?v=1689764858
fundo-rainha-d-leonor-obras-nas-misericordias
Queen D. A journey that reveals the place that the secular institution occupies in the path of democratic construction in the country.

In this itinerary through the vibrant times that followed April 25, we get to know the frantic ping-pong that establishes itself between the dynamic reality of the country and the activity of the Santa Casa. The new ways of being and doing social action, grounded in close work. The integration into the secular institution of a vast number of social facilities that were then facing serious survival difficulties. The work done with residents' committees to meet the aspirations of the communities. The early effort to welcome the so-called “returnees.” The temporary transfer of the hospital establishments of the Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Lisboa – Alcoitão Rehabilitation Medicine Center and Sant’Ana Orthopedic Hospital – to the State's tutelage, with eyes set on the emergence of a National Health Service.

Stages of a historical journey intensely populated by the challenges that prompted the Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Lisboa to meet the needs of the population, whether they emerged from the young scenario of democratic building or the persistent ones from time immemorial.

Page 18 Times change, wills change. The Foundlings of the Lisbon Wheel

This work constitutes the first volume of the catalog of the exhibition Children of all… Children of whom? The abandoned of the wheel of Lisbon, which aimed to reveal, with historical rigor and human density, the reality of abandoned children in Lisbon and the assistance system that received them over the centuries. Here, the entirety of the textual contents is gathered, as well as the representations of the artworks and archival documents displayed in the exhibition, around which the exhibition discourse developed, in a permanent dialogue and interaction. The art – represented, among others, by works of Leonardo da Vinci, Paula Rego, Graça Morais, Júlio Pomar, and Almada Negreiros – introduced a layer of sensitive and critical reading about motherhood, vulnerability, and collective responsibility regarding the phenomenon of child abandonment and its causes.

But more than presenting documents and artistic works as “objects” in themselves, the narrative center of the exhibition was placed on the abandoned children and their destinies: it followed the life stories of some of them, now adults, reconstructing paths through archival documents and the memory shared by their descendants, giving a face to those who, normally, remain forgotten by History.

The signs of the abandoned – small objects and messages left with the children (handwritten notes accompanied, or not, by textiles, medals, devotional images, amulets, or even locks of the mother’s hair) – were taken as threads of connection between the moment of abandonment at the wheel and the subsequent trajectories of the children, constituting the motif to unveil their life stories.
Far from being mere curiosities, these documents show how, even in situations where the identity and affiliation of the children were concealed, out of necessity or institutional norm, the intention to leave a key for future recognition of these minors by their relatives persisted.

The contents presented in this first volume, just like the exhibition itself, highlight this tension: between secrecy and care, between loss and the possibility of a reunion.

GENERAL COORDINATION
Teresa Nicolau – Director of Culture of the Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Lisboa

EXECUTIVE COORDINATION
Helena Mantas – Museu de São Roque, SCML
Francisco d’Orey Manoel – Historical Archive of SCML
Nelson Moreira Antão – Historical Archive of SCML

CONTENT AUTHORS
Nelson Moreira Antão
Teresa Nicolau
Helena Mantas
Francisco d’Orey Manoel

GRAPHIC DESIGN
Nuno Caniça – Stripeline, Lda.

TECHNICAL SUPPORT
Sílvia Salvado – Historical Archive of SCML

PHOTOGRAPHS
Archief Gent
Archivio Storico dell'Istituto degli Innocenti
– M.
