Debes 1969 and Mitchell's “Pictorial Turn” 1994), focusing on the analysis of artifacts outside their original context. Taking the collection of mingqi 明器 (lit. “brilliant objects”) from Casa Ásia - Francisco Capelo Collection (Santa Casa da Misericórdia, Lisbon) as a case study, it seeks to demonstrate the importance of a correct “reading” of these artifacts.
The mingqi 明器 were used in funerary practices in China and functioned in harmony with other objects and along with the architecture of the tomb, aiming to support a broader funerary purpose, which was to comfort and satisfy the deceased.
The funerary figures (yong 俑) of dancers, animals, beasts, and everyday objects, among others, reveal both how Ancient and Imperial Chinese society viewed death and how they lived. Since life in the afterlife was considered an extension of earthly life, these statuettes, called mingqi (明器), reveal details of everyday life and offer perspectives on belief systems in their longue durée.
The analysis focuses on two complementary aspects: the first addresses the decoding of symbolism and material culture in Ancient Chinese funerary practices, and the second, through the examination of specific pieces from the collection, aims to illustrate how visual literacy allows for the reconstruction of social narratives and rituals, transforming the artifact into a readable document of the religious practices and artistic identity of Ancient and Imperial China.

Biographical note
Elisabetta Colla - is a sinologist and art historian.
