In 1998, on the eve of the new millennium, the Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Lisboa launched the book As Obras de Misericórdia para o Século XXI. The occasion was also one of celebration, as that year was the 500th anniversary of the foundation of the Misericórdias.

The publication that is now being republished offers a reflective and critical look, by the hand of several renowned personalities in Portuguese society, on the fourteen works of mercy - spiritual and corporal - that are in the matrix of Santa Casa and that guide its action for more than five centuries.

Although almost two decades later, the words written in 1998 are still current and it is imperative to remember them, looking at the fourteen works of the Compromisso da Misericórdia in the light of the 21st century. For that reason, and because the world has changed over the years, we bring the book to new audiences in an eBook version. We therefore make use of the available digital platforms to make it accessible to more readers and so that, reconciling the modern with the multi-secular experience of Santa Casa, we reaffirm the basic values ​​of the institution for today.
