On the Path of Japan - Oriental Art in the Collections of the Santa Casa da Misericórdia of Lisbon

Descriptive catalog and selected inventory of the oriental art collection, a valuable collection belonging to the holdings of the Museum of São Roque of the Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Lisboa. This publication was edited in the context of the temporary exhibition “On the Path to Japan,” organized in 1993, the year that marked the 450th anniversary of the arrival of the Portuguese in Japan. This catalog showcases pieces of great artistic value and exoticism that demonstrate the Portuguese presence in those regions and testify to the cultural exchange between Portugal and the East. This publication also includes essays by art history specialists that focus on the themes of missionary work, art and religious artifacts, and the reception of oriental art objects in Portugal. The present catalog of oriental art in the collections of the Museum of São Roque includes an illustrated description of a set of 32 pieces, examples from the areas of sculpture, goldsmithing, sacred art, porcelain, vestments, among others; selected pieces from a total of 51 inventoried objects. An edition produced with the support of the Fundação Oriente and the National Commission for the Commemorations of the Portuguese Discoveries.
