A work dedicated to the centenary history of the Museum of São Roque, from its genesis to the present day, published in the context of the celebrations of the 100 years of the museum space of the Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Lisboa. This book introduces one of the first art museums in Portugal, whose collection, extremely rich and diverse, has always been a unique reference for the study of Portuguese and European art. Through this work, the reader follows the trail of the historical chronicle of the Museum of S. Roque, from the origin and constitution of the collection, through the genesis of the museum space and the first presentation of the collection in 1905, not forgetting the beginnings of a museum that was originally designated as the Museum of the Treasure of the Chapel of S. João Baptista in S. Roque, up to the present day. Throughout history, a unique collection is presented, composed mostly of sacred art pieces, with a wide artistic and typological range – with an emphasis on the cores of painting, sculpture, goldsmithing, and textiles – representative of the evolution of Art between the 16th and 20th centuries. An edition published with the support of the Portuguese Institute of Museums / Portuguese Museum Network and the Lisbon City Council.
