A Capela de São João Batista da Igreja de São Roque de Lisboa: a encomenda, a obra, as coleções
The Chapel of São João Batista of the Church of São Roque in Lisbon was entirely built in Rome in the forties of the 18th century, transported in three ships and built in the capital of the Portuguese empire, following an order from D. João V. Following the expulsion of the Society of Jesus, this order of the king “Magnanimous”, of incalculable value and fortunately spared by the 1755 earthquake, would be delivered to the Misericórdia de Lisboa in 1768 by D. José I, together with the Church of San Roque. Under the scientific and editorial coordination of Professor Teresa Leonor M. Vale, the book brings together studies by renowned Portuguese and foreign researchers, specialists in the different artistic areas in which the chapel and its collections are focused: architecture, sculpture, mosaics, metalwork, goldsmithing , textiles, lace, furniture, books. Of enormous relevance in historical, cultural and artistic terms – both nationally and internationally – the chapel is, here, the object of the most complete study ever carried out on its history and heritage, comprehensively addressing the commissioning process, its work and its collections.
