Reference work on the Chapel of St. John the Baptist, one of the most important artistic treasures belonging to the Santa Casa da Misericórdia of Lisbon. This is a facsimile edition of the 1st edition, published in 1900, following the IV Centenary of the Santa Casa da Misericórdia of Lisbon. Under the subtitle 'Historical and Descriptive News', the authors narrate the history and describe the unique collection of the Chapel of St. John the Baptist, a work commissioned by King John V in the mid-18th century, built in Rome and later brought – disassembled and stored in three ships – to the Church of St. Roch, in Lisbon. This research work introduces readers to the chronicle of the foundation of the Chapel, also describing its collection and identifying the unique treasure it holds in pieces of goldsmithing, vestments, tapestries, and books. A meticulous study completed with an appendix of notes and documents of significant historical value, indispensable contributions to the understanding of the Chapel of St. John the Baptist. In the introduction of the work, Sousa Viterbo argues that “temple and museum is together the chapel of St. John the Baptist: the faith of a Christian will not be lost by entering it, a pilgrim of art, with eyes fixed on the Beautiful!” Reissued with the support of the Santa Casa da Misericórdia of Lisbon.
