A Capella de S. João Baptista: erecta na egreja de S. Roque
Reference work on the Chapel of S. João Baptista, one of the most important artistic treasures belonging to the Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Lisboa. This is a facsimile edition of the 1st edition, published in 1900, following the 4th centenary of the Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Lisboa. Under the subtitle 'Historical and Descriptive News', the authors narrate the story and describe the unique collection of the Capela de São João Baptista, a work commissioned by D. João V in the mid-18th century, built in Rome and later brought – dismantled and stored in three ships - to the Church of São Roque, in Lisbon. This research work makes known to readers the chronicle of the foundation of the Chapel, also describing its collection and identifying the unique treasure that it keeps in pieces of jewellery, vestments, tapestries and books. A detailed study completed with an appendix of notes and documents of significant historical value, indispensable contributions to the understanding of the Chapel of S. João Batista In the introduction to the work, Sousa Viterbo argues that “the temple and museum are together the chapel of S. Whoever enters it, pilgrim of art, with eyes fixed on Bello, will lose the faith of Christ!” Reissue published with the support of Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Lisboa.
