Work that narrates the historical journey of the Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Lisboa between 1498 and 1998, from its foundation to contemporary times, a research work authored by Professor Doctor Joaquim Veríssimo Serrão. In the course of this long itinerary that spans five centuries, the author follows the trail of the chronological timeline of the ongoing management of the ancestral institution of the capital, “whenever possible framed by contemporary testimonies, both of documentary background and informational basis.” The book is organized into IX chapters, from the one titled ‘From the Origins to the Loss of Independence’ to the designated ‘From April 25 to the Present Day,’ thus embracing a period of half a millennium. To these ‘Five Hundred Years of History’ is added the transcription of various Commitments, guiding documents of the action of the Misericórdia de Lisboa, drafted in different periods and presented here in an appendix. This substantial publication was edited as part of the Commemorations of the 5th Centenary of the Foundation of the Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Lisboa, marked in 1998.
