Report of the history and present of the intervention of Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Lisboa in the area of adoption, narrative in journalistic register. The author reveals the pioneering role of the secular institution of the capital in the care provided to children in a situation of family helplessness. A precursor statute that dates back to the origins of Misericórdia de Lisboa and that takes on a new dimension when Santa Casa makes history by inaugurating the first Adoption Service in Portugal. This book describes the good practices of Misericórdia, its intervention throughout the different moments of legislative evolution, its contribution to changing mentalities with a view to ending prejudice. In the second part, in a report, to the experience of the technicians, there are added the voices of men and women who, in the first person, come to tell their love stories, stories of families in which a child became a daughter by a desire that born in the heart. This is the second issue of the “Cadernos Solidários SCML” collection, an editorial series that showcases the work developed by Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Lisboa in its different areas of intervention.
