Account of the history and current situation of the intervention of the Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Lisboa in the area of adoption, narrated in a journalistic style. The author unveils the pioneering role of the centuries-old institution in the capital in the care provided to children in situations of family abandonment. A precursor status that dates back to the origin of the Misericórdia de Lisboa and which gains a new dimension when the Santa Casa makes history by inaugurating the first Adoption Service in Portugal. This book recounts the best practices of the Misericórdia, its intervention throughout the different moments of legislative evolution, and its contribution to changing mindsets aimed at ending prejudice. In the second part, in a report style, the experiences of the technicians are joined by the voices of men and women who, in the first person, come to tell their love stories, stories of families in which a child became a daughter through a desire that arises in the heart. This is the second issue of the “Cadernos Solidários SCML” collection, an editorial series that showcases the work developed by the Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Lisboa in its various areas of intervention.
