Chronicle of the life and work of António Marcelino Egreja, one of the most prominent benefactors of the Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Lisboa in the 20th century. In these pages, the story of a man with deep convictions, a skilled businessman, and a philanthropist guided by an unwavering sense of social justice is unveiled. Between the last quarter of the 19th century and the first half of the 20th century, António Marcelino Egreja earned recognition as a pioneering industrialist in the canning sector, a diligent finance official, and a shrewd real estate owner. In a will written in 1942, ten years before his death, he bequeathed various legacies to family members and employees and designated the Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Lisboa as the heir to a fortune that included more than a dozen properties in the capital, twenty gold bars, various jewels, several credit papers, and shares, among many other assets. This book is the seventh volume of the Beneméritos SCML Collection, an editorial series that introduces the benefactors of the centuries-old institution, men and women who, over more than 500 years, have contributed to the mission of good causes of the Santa Casa through their legacies, inheritances, and donations.
