Antonio Marcelino Egreja
Antonio Marcelino Egreja
Chronicle of the life and work of António Marcelino Egreja, one of the most prominent benefactors of the Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Lisboa in the 20th century. These pages reveal the story of a man of deep convictions, a skilled businessman and philanthropist guided by an unshakable sense of social justice. Between the last quarter of the 19th century and the first half of the 20th century, António Marcelino Egreja won credits as a pioneer industrialist in the canning sector, a zealous finance official or an astute real estate owner. In a will written in 1942, ten years before his death, he sent several legacies to family members and employees and elected the Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Lisboa, heir to a fortune that kept more than a dozen properties in the capital, twenty bars of gold, several jewelry, various credit papers and stocks, among many other goods. This book is the seventh volume of the Colecção Meméritos SCML, an editorial series that makes known the benefactors of the secular institution, men and women who, over more than 500 years, have contributed to the Santa Casa's mission of good causes through the their legacies, inheritances and donations.
