BA 500 years: Five Centuries of Bairro Alto (1512-2013)
--
This year, we celebrated the 500 years of one of the most remarkable neighborhoods in Lisbon, in both history and present day. Since the first geometric plan of Lisbon was authorized in 1513, when Lopo de Athouguia agreed with the landholders, Bartolomeu de Andrade and his wife, Francisca Cordovil, to divide it into lots, this neighborhood – initially designated as Vila Nova de Andrade – became a residence for artisans, seafarers, merchants, foreigners, and also a place of political intrigue, gatherings, and culture in its various manifestations.
In 2013, a series of commemorative initiatives were planned in Bairro Alto and also in its nearby surroundings.
