Reference work on the origins and evolution of the national Santas Casas da Misericórdia, facsimile edition of the 1st edition, published in 1897 by the National Press of Lisbon on the occasion of the Fourth Centenary of the Discovery of India. In addition to a more extensive initial chapter about the foundation and history of the first of the national Misericórdias – that of Lisbon – Costa Goodolphim presents historical summaries about the similar institutions spread throughout the national territory. These reviews are organized by districts, totaling more than two hundred Misericórdias in Portugal, distributed across Aveiro, Beja, Braga, Bragança, Castelo Branco, Coimbra, Évora, Faro, Guarda, Leiria, Lisbon, Portalegre, Porto, Santarém, Viana do Castelo, Vila Real, Viseu, Angra, Funchal, and Horta. According to the author, an essential chronicle to assess “the value of all charitable institutions, and their broad and relevant services provided to those who suffer and to the homeland” and to know the “most beautiful of Portuguese institutions – the holy Misericórdia.”
