Reference work on the origins and evolution of the national Santas Casas da Misericórdia, facsimile edition of the 1st edition, published in 1897 by the Lisbon National Press on the occasion of the Fourth Centenary of the Discovery of India. In addition to a broader initial chapter on the foundation and history of the first of the national Misericórdias – Lisbon – Costa Goodolphim presents historical summaries about similar institutions spread throughout the national territory. These reviews are organized by district, adding up to a total of more than two hundred Misericórdias in Portugal, distributed by Aveiro, Beja, Braga, Bragança, Castelo Branco, Coimbra, Évora, Faro, Guarda, Leiria, Lisbon, Portalegre, Porto, Santarém , Viana do Castelo, Vila Real, Viseu, Angra, Funchal and Horta. According to the author, an indispensable chronicle to assess “the value of all charitable institutions, and their wide and relevant services provided to those who suffer and to the country” and to get to know the “most beautiful of Portuguese institutions – the Holy Mercy”.
