Museum of São Roque

Museum of São Roque

The Museum of São Roque was one of the first art museums to be established in Portugal. It opened to the public on January 11, 1905, under the name Museum of the Treasure of the Chapel of Saint John the Baptist, in reference to the important collection of Italian art that was the basis for its creation. Since its opening, it has been housed in the building of the former Casa-Professa of the Society of Jesus in Lisbon, adjacent to the Church of Saint Roch, which was donated to the Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Lisboa in 1768, after the expulsion of the Jesuits.

Throughout the 20th century, it underwent several renovations, which allowed it to keep up with the changes in the field of museology. The most significant renovation took place between 2006 and 2008, allowing the museum to expand and double its permanent exhibition area.
