This exercise notebook, which I have the privilege of prefacing, constitutes an excellent working tool for professionals dedicated to promoting the maintenance of the functions of individuals with cognitive deterioration in daily activities.
The literature suggests that people with cognitive impairment who benefit from interventions like those suggested in this compilation show improvements in their mental capacities – both global and specific – that can last for up to 12 months.
A 2023 review, which included 25 studies with nearly 2000 participants in total, found evidence of a clinically significant difference of almost 2 points in the total score of the MMSE (Mini Mental State Examination) between the cognitive stimulation and control groups. Relevant improvements were also recorded in terms of communication and social interaction.
In addition to scientifically documented gains in cognitive and social skills, I believe the playful and appealing aspect of the exercises compiled in this notebook should not be overlooked.
I congratulate the Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Lisboa for the launch of a new volume of this Cognitive Stimulation Exercise Notebook.
With this valuable instrument, it will be possible to improve the quality of life for many fellow citizens with cognitive impairment, as well as for their families, friends, and caregivers.
Enjoy!
