In 2017, Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Lisboa received, by donation, acquisition and deposit, the collection of Asian art from collector Francisco Capelo, to be installed in the future at the Palácio Portugal da Gama/São Roque, located in Bairro Alto, with the designation of Casa Asia – Francisco Capelo Collection.
Located in the cultural hub of São Roque, this building was recovered and turned into a museum to publicly display the collection of Asian art that Francisco Capelo gathered over more than 20 years, with the aim of making it available to the public, following strict selection criteria. , such as rarity, integrity and good condition, without neglecting the aesthetic value of each object.
Consisting of around 1300 objects, it encompasses a great diversity of works of art from various regions of Asia, from the 3rd century BC to the 3rd century BC. to the beginning of the 20th century, with pieces from fourteen Asian countries: India, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Myanmar, Laos, Vietnam, Cambodia, China, Korea, Japan, Indonesia, East Timor and the Philippines.
The incorporation of this collection into the Santa Casa da Misericórdia in Lisbon will make it possible to bridge the gap with the Portuguese presence in Asia, expressed in the church and the São Roque Museum, especially in the pictorial cycle in the sacristy and in the Asian art center.
You can visit this space without prior appointment, on a first-come, first-served basis. Maximum 20 participants.
Guided tours: Tuesdays at 11am and Thursdays at 3pm
