Asia House – Francisco Capelo Collection

Asia House – Francisco Capelo Collection

In 2017, the Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Lisboa received, through donation, acquisition, and deposit, the Asian art collection of the collector Francisco Capelo, to be installed in the future at Palácio Portugal da Gama/São Roque, located in Bairro Alto, designated as Casa Ásia – Collection Francisco Capelo.

Located in the cultural hub of São Roque, this building has been restored and turned into a museum to publicly display the collection of Asian art that Francisco Capelo gathered over more than 20 years, with the aim of making it available to the public, adhering to strict selection criteria such as rarity, integrity, and good condition, while not neglecting the aesthetic value of each object.

Comprising around 1300 objects, it encompasses a wide variety of artworks from various regions of Asia, from the 3rd century BC to the early 20th century, with pieces from fourteen countries in Asia: India, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Myanmar, Laos, Vietnam, Cambodia, China, Korea, Japan, Indonesia, East Timor, and the Philippines.

The incorporation of this collection into the Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Lisboa will allow for a connection with the Portuguese presence in Asia, expressed in the church and the Museum of São Roque, especially in the pictorial cycle of the sacristy and the core of Asian art.

You can visit this space without prior appointment, on a first-come, first-served basis. Maximum of 20 participants.
