Museum of São Roque - Catalog 2nd Edition

Catalog and selected inventory of the collections of the Museum of São Roque of the Santa Casa da Misericórdia of Lisbon. This publication presents a narrative and illustrated overview of the valuable collection preserved in the Museum of São Roque, a heritage of great social, historical, and artistic value resulting from donations, inheritances, and acquisitions over the more than 500 years of existence of this secular institution. After a brief summary of the genesis and evolution of this museum space, the reader is invited to explore a set of collections of extreme representativeness in the context of Portuguese, European, and Luso-Oriental art. The catalog is organized into seven major sections belonging to the museum's collection: painting, sculpture, goldsmithing, reliquaries, altar frontals, oriental art, and the Chapel of Saint John the Baptist, with sets accompanied by inventory cards of representative specimens from the different sections, totaling 110 pieces. This publication was edited following the most recent project of renovation and expansion of the Museum of São Roque, completed in 2008.
