On the bustling Avenida Almirante Reis, in the heart of the capital, the once Cozinha Económica No. 2, built in the late 19th century, collapses under the weight of the Teatro Moderno, which has also fallen. It is the building that replaces it, designed by Lino de Carvalho and completed in 1914, that will outline the contours of the Cozinha Económica dos Anjos, continuing to provide affordable meals to the underprivileged population. It was transferred to the Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Lisboa in 1928 – along with the other economic kitchens – but has remained standing and fully operational to this day, under the name Centro de Apoio Social dos Anjos (CASA). The history of this historical facility is unraveled in these pages – whose services today go beyond the dining hall, allowing for the temporary accommodation of people in the facilities and offering activities in the occupational workshop – as well as the social diagnosis of the population it serves, its action strategy, and intervention methodology. This book is part of the Coleção Sebentas de Ação Social, a publishing line dedicated to sharing knowledge acquired and consolidated through practice, with the awareness, however, that this knowledge is always in a state of continuous construction and improvement.
