Volume I

The Cognitive Stimulation Exercise Workbook was developed to provide an additional contribution to everyone who works daily with older people and encounters the gradual loss of their cognitive functions.

This Exercise Workbook offers a diverse set of stimulation activities that work on different cognitive functions, with three levels of difficulty so that it can be adapted to each person's abilities and interests. The variety of exercises also allows them to be used with people who are illiterate or have limited education.
Whenever possible, completing these exercises should be enhanced with moments of social interaction and activities that are meaningful to the person. This Exercise Workbook is intended as a complementary contribution to maintaining the cognitive abilities and quality of life of the people for whom it is intended.

Volume II

This exercise workbook, which I have the privilege of prefacing, is an excellent working tool for professionals dedicated to promoting the maintenance of the functions of individuals with cognitive mobility in
everyday activities.
The literature suggests that people with cognitive impairment who benefit from interventions such as those proposed in this compilation experience improvements in their mental abilities - both global and specific - which can be maintained for up to 12 months.
A 2023 review, which included 25 studies with nearly 2,000 participants in total, found evidence of a clinically significant difference of almost 2 points in the total MMSE (Mini-Mental State Examination) score between the cognitive stimulation and control groups. Relevant improvements were also recorded in communication and social interaction.
In addition to the scientifically documented gains in cognitive and social skills, the playful and appealing nature of the exercises compiled in this workbook should not be overlooked.
Congratulations to Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Lisboa on the launch of a new volume of this Cognitive Stimulation Exercise Workbook.
With this valuable instrument, it will be possible to improve the quality of life of many fellow citizens with cognitive impairment, as well as that of their families, friends and caregivers.
Enjoy!
