Detailed catalog and inventory of the collection of Master Rodrigues Alves (1910-1967), a renowned illustrator of the newspaper O Século and a prestigious teacher at the António Arroio School in Lisbon. This publication showcases a heterogeneous body of work, composed of 1349 illustrated cards that present drawings and paintings, highlighting illustrations for periodicals, musical scores, posters, and books, as well as lettering design, completed with model studies, painting and drawing, works for animated cinema, not forgetting a core of works signed by other national artists; colleagues, disciples, and contemporary painters of Master Rodrigues Alves. The study and inventory of this collection offers a unique testimony of the evolution of graphic arts in Portugal between the 1920s and 1960s, as well as the prevailing political and social ideas during the Estado Novo. This singular collection, integrated into the holdings of the Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Lisboa by the legacy of the benefactor Maria Teresa Rodrigues Alves, sister of the renowned illustrator of O Século, was the subject of a temporary exhibition organized by the Museu de S. Roque in 2003, which resulted in the present catalog.
