Colecção Rodrigues Alves : Uma Herança da Misericórdia de Lisboa
Catalog and in-depth inventory of the collection of Mestre Rodrigues Alves (1910-1967), renowned illustrator of the newspaper O Século and prestigious teacher at the António Arroio School, in Lisbon. This publication presents a heterogeneous work, composed of 1349 illustrated cards that present drawings and paintings, of which the illustration of periodicals, musical scores, posters and books, as well as lyric design, completed with studies of model, painting and drawing, works for animated cinema, not to mention a group of works signed by other national artists; colleagues, disciples and contemporary painters to Mestre Rodrigues Alves. The study and inventory of this collection offers an exemplary testimony of the evolution of graphic arts in Portugal between the 20s and 60s of the 20th century, as well as the political and social ideology prevailing during the Estado Novo. This unique collection, integrated into the collection of the Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Lisboa as a legacy of the benefactor Maria Teresa Rodrigues Alves, sister of the renowned illustrator of O Século, was the subject of a temporary exhibition organized by the Museu de S. Roque in 2003, an exhibition of which resulted in the present catalogue.
