Legislative Collection of the Santa Casa da Misericórdia of Lisbon (1498-1998)

A collection that brings together the legislative diplomas regarding the Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Lisboa and some legislation about the Misericórdias in general, produced between 1498 and 1998. It is an “indispensable work for anyone who wants to know the history of the Institution, in its legal aspect, [que] will be a valuable aid for researchers, scholars, and those interested in social themes, allowing new horizons to be opened in the complexity of its current legal regime,” as stated in the preface by Elvira Brandão, Secretary-General of the Santa Casa. Thanks to the identification and summary of the 1155 compiled diplomas, organized chronologically, the reader is introduced to the historical evolution of the Misericórdia de Lisboa, the transformations it has undergone in its legal configuration, and the importance of legislative activity in the growth and development of the institution over five centuries. An edition published on the occasion of the V Centenary of the Foundation of the Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Lisboa.
