Pine, Plum Tree, and Birds
Pair of six-panel screens
Ink, pigments, paper, gold, gold leaf
Ishida Yutei
Edo period, 18th century (mid)
The pair of six-panel screens “Pine, Plum Tree, and Birds” is located in one of the rooms dedicated to Japan at Casa Ásia - Francisco Capelo Collection. These screens, from the Edo period (17th century), belong to the Rimpa aesthetic, a Japanese artistic movement known for its decorative and stylized style, which emerged in the early 17th century and has continued to this day.
This aesthetic values minimalist compositions, with refined shapes that enhance the delicacy and beauty of nature, and is characterized by vibrant colors, with naturalistic motifs and the use of gold or silver leaf as a background. It is based on the classic style of Japanese painting Yamato-e, known for its landscapes and court scenes, and employs techniques such as tarashikomi, - where one layer of paint is applied over another still wet, - and mokkutsu, a method that dispenses with outlined contours to create shapes. The use of gold and silver leaf gives shine and splendor to the works.
