Convento de S. Pedro de Alcântara
Convento de S. Pedro de Alcântara
Looking over the history and artistic collection of the Convent of São Pedro de Alcântara, in Lisbon's Bairro Alto, an imposing building of religious architecture that integrates the heritage of the Santa Casa de Misericórdia de Lisboa. The authors present this monumental 'ex-voto' of the Restoration War, built in 1680 on the initiative of D. António Luís de Menezes, Marquês de Marialva and Count of Cantanhede, in fulfillment of an oath taken on the occasion of the Battle of Montes clear. The property would be inhabited by the Arrábidos monks until 1833, on the eve of the extinction of religious orders in Portugal, when the architectural complex was handed over, with all its assets, to the Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Lisboa. The secular institution installed the Recolhimento das Órfãs in the building, a work supported by several legacies. This historical and artistic itinerary also includes articles about the Capela dos Lencastres, built in the late 1600s for the family cult of Cardinal D. Veríssimo de Lencastre, on the property's unique tile collection - collection dating from the mid-18th century to the 20th century -, without forgetting a review of the Instituto de S. Pedro de Alcântara, a work of education of notable social reach and recognized prestige supervised by the Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Lisboa.
