Mater Misericordiae

In-depth reflection on the iconography of Our Lady of Mercy, a study that focuses on issues of symbolism and artistic representation of the image of the Virgin of Mercy, Mater Misericordiae. The book presents numerous works of painting, sculpture, engraved documents and illuminations, distinct artistic manifestations united by the theme of the representation of Our Lady of Mercy. In addition to the profuse images that illustrate the theme - examples coming from an exhaustive survey of artistic pieces from different sources, from the Misericórdias to private collections -, this publication brings together studies by recognized experts on the iconography of the Virgin of Mercy, known in Christian art western since the 12th century. The book entitled Mater Misericordiae, which presents readers with the imagery of Our Lady of Mercy with her protective mantle open over humanity, was published by Santa Casa da Misericórdia in Lisbon in 1995, the International Year of Tolerance.
