Mother of Mercy

In-depth reflection on the iconography of Our Lady of Mercy, a study that delves into the issues of symbolism and artistic representation of the image of the Virgin of Mercy, Mater Misericordiae. The book introduces numerous works of painting, sculpture, recorded documents, and illuminations, distinct artistic manifestations united by the theme of the representation of Our Lady of Mercy. In addition to the abundant images that illustrate the theme - examples originating from an exhaustive survey of artistic pieces from various sources, from the Misericórdias to private collections - this publication gathers studies from recognized specialists about the iconography of the Virgin of Mercy, known in Western Christian art since the 12th century. The book titled Mater Misericordiae, which presents to readers the imagery of Our Lady of Mercy with her protective mantle open over humanity, was published by the Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Lisboa in 1995, the International Year of Tolerance.
