Convento São Pedro de Alcântara
Convento São Pedro de Alcântara
Founded in the 17th century. XVII (laying of the first stone in 1680), by D. António Luis de Menezes, 1st Marquis of Marialva, for religious religious of the order of Saint Francis, it was almost completely destroyed in 1755, with its reconstruction beginning in 1783. U-shaped plan, it develops into 3 rectangular bodies articulated around a 4-flight staircase, decorated with tiles, which represent the stigma of St. Peter, and which leads to a raised and paved churchyard.
The entrance to the Church, opened under a portico of arches and galilee, gives simultaneous access to the Convent Houses and the Lencastres Chapel, built in this complex later, between 1686 and 1692. The Church, with a single nave, is profusely lit by large windows , is predominantly Baroque, translating a harmonious symbiosis between gilded carvings and eighteenth-century monochrome tiles. Also noteworthy are the frescoes on the ceiling and the original painting by Quillard, representing "The Coronation of Our Lady by the Holy Trinity". Another curious aspect of this area, which includes the Church and the Convent, is due to the fact that it was constituted as a necropolis of illustrious people, including Manuel da Maia, buried in the Chapter House.
From 1833 onwards, the Convent became part of the Misericórdia de Lisboa and in 1943 it began to be administered, in a cooperation agreement, by the Sisters of the Portuguese Province of the Congregation of the Presentation of Mary. It is currently called the Institute of S. Pedro de Alcântara. This property is part of the consolidated fabric of Bairro Alto, classified as a Public Interest Group.
