Descriptive inventory of the 17th-century altar frontals that once adorned the altars of the Church of S. Roque. In this publication about frameworks and vestments, textiles with an important role in religious worship, special attention is given to the so-called rich frontals, used in major celebrations. In the words of Nuno Vassallo e Silva, the “frontals of S. Roque are undeniably a beautiful testimony to the art of embroidery in Portugal throughout the 17th century.” This is a set of ten textile examples “almost entirely embroidered by national artists, illustrative of a sophisticated mastery of textile technique,” all from the 17th century, “the golden age of temple ornamentation.” A detailed descriptive sheet accompanied by photographs is prepared for this collection of works, in which materials and techniques used, motifs and decorative details, among other characteristics, are inventoried. This research work resulted from the temporary exhibition that the Museum of S. Roque dedicated to the altar frontals of the Church of S. Roque in 1994.
