Reference work on the fundamental elements of the Universal History of Assistance as well as the origins and evolution of the Santas Casas da Misericórdia in Portugal. In this publication, Fernando da Silva Correia - author who deeply researched the life and work of the founder of Misericórdia de Lisboa, Queen D. Leonor de Lencastre - offers the reader a detailed and appealing account of how “assistance has been viewed in various ways throughout History, and seen in the light of many criteria, according to the degree of civilization and the social, political and religious ideas of each people”. This work is structured in four parts: Assistance in Antiquity, Christian Assistance before the 16th century, Assistance in Portugal in the Middle Ages and, finally, the reform of Assistance in Portugal at the end of the 15th century. The reissue of this publication - which had its first edition in 1944 and which had long been out of print on the book market - remains very current, constituting a solid basis for researchers today. An editorial initiative integrated into the 5th Centenary of the Foundation of Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Lisboa.
