Catalog and descriptive inventory of the sculpture collection of the Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Lisboa, a valuable artistic collection that allows for a true journey through Portuguese sculpture from the 16th to the 20th century. The catalog presents more than 213 pieces, a representative set of the most important national artistic movements from the threshold of the 1500s to contemporary times, from the Manueline period to the end of Portuguese Baroque. Organized chronologically in this inventory, the collection of the Misericórdia de Lisboa uniquely witnesses the evolution of sculpture in the context of the History of Portuguese Art. Highlighting the collection resulting from the presence of the Society of Jesus in the building of S. Roque, the current headquarters of the Santa Casa, particularly the magnificent core of oriental art, emblematic of the important role of the Jesuits in the long process of evangelization and cultural exchange. This publication was edited on the occasion of the temporary exhibition held at the Museum of São Roque in 2000, titled “Devotional Sculpture in the Action of the Counter-Reformation.”
