Sculpture. century XVI to century XX. Misericórdia de Lisboa painting collection
Catalog and descriptive inventory of the sculpture collection of Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Lisboa, a valuable artistic treasure that allows a true journey through Portuguese sculpture between the 16th and 20th centuries. The catalog presents more than 213 pieces, a representative set of the most important national artistic currents from the threshold of the 15th century to contemporary times, from the Manueline period to the end of the Portuguese Baroque. Organized chronologically in this inventory, the Misericórdia de Lisboa collection testifies, in a unique way, to the evolution of sculpture in the context of the History of Portuguese Art. Highlight for the collection resulting from the presence of the Society of Jesus in the building of S. Roque, current headquarters of the Santa Casa, in particular for the magnificent nucleus of oriental art, emblematic of the important role of the Jesuits in the long process of evangelization and meeting of cultures. This publication was edited on the occasion of the temporary exhibition held at the São Roque Museum in 2000, entitled “Devotive Sculpture in the Action of the Counter Reformation”.
