Personal and family archives have been receiving increasing attention from researchers, biographers, historians, institutions and the archival community itself. One of the central theoretical issues of archival science is precisely the classification of archival documents, emphasizing their connection to the fundamental principles and basic concepts of the discipline.

Theoretical and methodological problems of classifying family and personal archives are the central theme of this book by Luís Horta Lima, based on his master's dissertation in Information and Documentation Sciences. Prefaced by Professor Armando Malheiro da Silva, the work has as its object of study an important documentary nucleus in the custody of the Historical Archives of the Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Lisboa: the collection of the Benito Maçãs family, incorporated in the scope of the fulfillment of the testamentary dispositions of Delmira Maçãs , meritorious of this institution.
