Personal and family files have been receiving increasing attention from researchers, biographers, historians, institutions, and the archival community itself. One of the central theoretical issues in archival science is, precisely, the classification of archival documents, emphasizing their connection to the fundamental principles and basic concepts of the discipline.
The theoretical and methodological problems of classifying family and personal archives are the central theme of this book by Luís Horta Lima, based on his master's thesis in Information and Documentation Sciences. Prefaced by Professor Armando Malheiro da Silva, the work studies an important documentary nucleus held by the Historical Archive of the Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Lisboa: the collection of the Benito Maçãs family, incorporated in compliance with the testamentary provisions of Delmira Maçãs, a benefactor of this institution.
