Museum and Church of São Roque and Casa Ásia – Francisco Capelo Collection
Exhibition route and temporary exhibition
Opening: September 15 at 6 p.m., at the Church of São Roque

Paths of Faith is an exhibition route and temporary exhibition presented in two cultural venues of Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Lisboa, exploring faith, love, and death as central dimensions of the human experience. Through 28 works from different periods, geographical regions, and artistic languages, from the Museum of São Roque and Casa Ásia – Francisco Capelo Collection, it proposes a reflection on the sacred and the profane, the body and transcendence, in a dialogue between physical, social, symbolic, and spiritual dimensions.

The temporary exhibition Oblívio is an integral part of the route. Created by Mafalda Oliveira Martins and on display at the Museum of São Roque, Oblívio was born as a tribute to the 233 people who died alone in Lisbon in 2021, without relatives or friends to claim their bodies. Inspired by a ceremony held at the Church of São Roque, this exhibition preserves the memory of those whose names were all that remained. Through imagined faces created with simple materials, it invites contemplation and reflection on loneliness, human dignity, and the importance of remembering those who passed away without leaving a visible memory.

Step by Step / Piece by Piece is a series of guided tours integrated into the Paths of Faith exhibition route. The tours explore the selected works, highlighting their historical, artistic, and symbolic meanings. Through a dialogue between Christian and Asian traditions, they invite reflection on love, death, and faith, providing a gradual discovery of the connections that unite the two exhibition sections.

A series of thematic guided tours, taking place on the final four Saturdays of October, will reinforce the symbolic proximity to All Saints’ Day, intensifying public reflection on the themes of faith, love, and death.
