Church of São Roque
Church of São Roque
Since it was founded in 1498, Misericórdia de Lisboa has gathered a vast historical, artistic and documentary heritage, including the collections of the Museum and the Church of São Roque, classified as a National Monument in 1910.
The Church of São Roque is made up of a single nave, a shallow chancel and eight side chapels, this model being traditionally called “hall church”.
In the upper part, a set of large paintings, representing episodes from the life of Saint Ignatius of Loyola, the founder of the Society of Jesus, work by the painter Domingos da Cunha, “the Cabrinha”.
Of great architectural simplicity, this grand temple was built in accordance with the liturgical recommendations of the Council of Trent (1545-1563), being representative of the process of renewal of the post-Tridentine Catholic faith.
