Church of Saint Roch

Since its founding in 1498, the Misericórdia of Lisbon has accumulated a vast historical, artistic, and documentary heritage, of which the collections of the Museum and the Church of São Roque, as a National Monument in 1910.

The Church of São Roque consists of a single nave, a slightly deep main chapel, and eight side chapels, this model being traditionally referred to as a "hall church".

In the upper part, a set of large paintings represents episodes from the life of Saint Ignatius of Loyola, the founder of the Society of Jesus, the work of the painter Domingos da Cunha, "o Cabrinha". 

Of great architectural simplicity, this grand temple was built in accordance with the liturgical recommendations of the Council of Trent (1545-1563), being representative of the process of renewal of the post-Tridentine Catholic faith.
