The collection that the Santa Casa da Misericórdia publishes about its heritage with historical and artistic interest continues with the fifth volume dedicated to the built ensemble of the Mitra, located in Poço do Bispo in Marvila.

This built ensemble is linked to various phases, from its integration into the assets of the first Patriarch of Lisbon, to its transformation into a cork factory – the Seixas Factory –, a warehouse for the historical fire trucks, and finally, its function as a shelter for begging and the collection of long-term psychiatric patients, which is believed to have stigmatized the place and its inhabitants. The Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Lisboa has decided that this story cannot be rewritten or compensated for its less positive aspects, but that the Mitra deserves that the purpose it now serves allows its memory to be respected and its future to be promising.

The objective that presides over this collection aims to enhance the heritage dimension through a permanent dialogue between the author of the historical study and the architect responsible for the rehabilitation project, in a crossing of perspectives and complementary experiences that enrich both the understanding of the past and the possibilities for more suitable solutions for future functioning.
