A look at the Nativity cycle, from the Birth of Christ to the Adoration of the Magi, based on its artistic representations, from painting to sculpture. This research work resulted from the temporary exhibition organized by the Museum of S. Roque in 1994, as part of the International Year of the Family, consisting of a core of artworks related to the theme of the Nativity. This book analyzes the plastic iconography of the Nativity cycle, richly framed by various religious narratives – from biblical texts to apocryphal gospels – through important examples of Mannerist painting from the collection of the Museum of S. Roque, engravings printed in missals from the 16th to the 18th century from the Historical Archive of the Lisbon Mercy, not forgetting various artistic works from private collections or the holdings of the National Museum of Ancient Art. This publication also presents descriptive and explanatory texts about a set of 30 works of art – painting, sculpture, goldsmithing, tiles, among others – representative of the episodes of the Birth of Christ, Circumcision, Adoration of the Magi, Adoration of the Shepherds, and Presentation in the Temple.
