Nativity in S. Roque

Looking at the Nativity cycle, from the Birth of Christ to the Adoration of the Magi, from its artistic representations, from painting to sculpture . This research work resulted from the temporary exhibition that the Museu de S. Roque organized in 1994, within the scope of the International Year of the Family, consisting of a nucleus of works of art alluding to the theme of the Nativity. In this book, the plastic iconography of the Nativity cycle is analyzed, profusely framed by various religious narratives – from biblical texts to the apocryphal gospels –, through important examples of Mannerist painting from the collection of the Museum of S. Roque, of engravings printed in missals of the from the 16th to the 18th century from the bottom of the Historical Archives of Misericórdia de Lisboa, without forgetting several artistic works from private collections or from the collection of the National Museum of Ancient Art. This publication also presents descriptive and explanatory texts about a set of 30 works of art - painting, sculpture, goldsmithing, tile, among others - representing the episodes of the Birth of Christ, Circumcision, Adoration of the Magi, Adoration of the Shepherds and Presentation in the Temple .
