Exhibition catalog "Eight relics, Eight Saints and many little things"
In the laboratory, as part of the reliquiarum project, relics and saints will be placed under observation.
There are no relics without saints, it's true!
Therefore, from the eight relics in the collection of the São Roque Museum, we will seek to promote devotions, their material perpetuity and their powers of intercession.
Of the eight saints (or, perhaps, a few more?) we want to show their lives, their hagiographies and the trajectory of the powers in building the personal sanctity of each of them.
It's not enough for us.
We need to widen the circle to explain.
We need a few more things!
Eight relics, eight saints, but many images, many documents, reinforced by cakes, added with small objects and accompanied by gestures,...
We will have to attend processions, participate in pilgrimages, see touching and devotion rituals. In the middle there will be marching bands and animals, fogaças and wax candles.
The geographic scope will be Portugal and, there, chronologies will intersect.
However, attention will be focused on the sample under analysis, the relics.
As a result of the reliquiarum's detailed laboratory work, in this expository essay we will show the relics deeply rooted in the cultures of the territory and perceive them as components of the landscape.
