Catalog of the temporary exhibition dedicated to the theme of the Foundlings of the Roda da Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Lisboa, open to the public in 2001, resulting from a research work that leads to a reflection on the unique role of the Santa Casa in supporting unprotected children. This inventory describes and illustrates 63 pieces, 57 of which are signs of foundlings, documents, and artifacts that accompanied abandoned children entrusted to the care of the Misericórdia de Lisboa, dated from the 18th and 19th centuries. These manuscripts and objects, testimonies of affection and loss, served to mark the origin of the child placed under the institution's care, but also to express the desire for their subsequent rescue, with a view to reintegration into the family of origin. It is a collection of writings revealing the experiences of the time, accompanied by artifacts of symbolic, magical, and religious significance, a core endowed with a strong emotional charge. The Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Lisboa holds one of the best collections of signs of foundlings currently existing, a collection that is made known to all readers through this publication.
