Catalog of the temporary exhibition dedicated to the Social Games of the Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Lisboa, organized by the Museu de S. Roque in 2004. This publication reveals the vast heritage linked to the social games of the Santa Casa, a unique collection in Portugal, which highlights royal decrees, engravings, old tickets and lottery plans, advertising and humorous posters, as well as valuable photographic and audiovisual records. It is a collection of undeniable documentary importance that invites a journey through the last two centuries of this activity, from the creation of lotteries – granted by royal decree of D. Maria I in 1793 to the Misericórdia de Lisboa – to the present day, including the new games created in the second half of the 20th century. An approach to the history and current state of social games, which also includes a look at lotteries in pre-contemporary literature and an analysis of the graphic aspects surrounding social games. This catalog also introduces the games supervised by the Santa Casa as a source of funding for the social causes of the institution, but also for projects of many other entities, in the fields of health, social action, culture, and sports throughout the country.
