Volume I and II

Descriptive inventory of the Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Lisboa painting collection, a valuable artistic collection identified and illustrated in two volumes. In all, more than 300 works of art are presented, examples that allow a true journey through Portuguese painting between the 16th and 20th centuries. Organized chronologically in this inventory, the Misericórdia de Lisboa painting collection has unique characteristics, taking into account that “it was born and grew motivated by the consumption needs of the religious image over the centuries”, as the author says. The magnificent paintings made known to readers come from three major funds: that of the Society of Jesus (S. Roque Church), that of the Convent of S. Pedro de Alcântara and the nucleus of Misericórdia de Lisboa. This Volume II contains more than one hundred and a half paintings from the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries. An edition published on the occasion of the V Centenary of the Foundation of Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Lisboa.
