Descriptive inventory of the painting collection of the Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Lisboa, a valuable artistic collection identified and illustrated in two volumes. In total, more than 300 works of art are presented, examples that allow for a true journey through Portuguese painting from the 16th to the 20th century. Organized chronologically in this inventory, the painting collection of the Misericórdia de Lisboa has unique characteristics, considering that it “was born and grew motivated by the consumption needs of religious imagery over the centuries,” as the author states. The magnificent paintings revealed to readers come from three major collections: that of the Society of Jesus (Church of S. Roque), that of the Convent of S. Pedro de Alcântara, and the core of the Misericórdia de Lisboa. This Volume II includes more than one hundred and fifty paintings originating from the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries. An edition published on the occasion of the 5th Centenary of the Foundation of the Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Lisboa.
