Catalog of the collection of baroque lace from the Chapel of Saint John the Baptist, a valuable 18th-century collection belonging to the holdings of the Museum of São Roque of the Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Lisboa. Maria Filomena Brito guides readers through the historical journey of lace-making art, describing the basic technologies and existing models in Europe over time, covering the eras of the triumph of bobbin lace and the success of the Flemish industry, as well as the golden period of baroque lace. The author narrates the episode of the sumptuous commission of the Chapel of Saint John the Baptist by D. João V, in the mid-18th century, a work built in Rome and later brought to the Church of São Roque in Lisbon. The catalog includes 76 inventory records of baroque lace pieces that are part of the collection of the Chapel of Saint John the Baptist, one of the most important from the late Baroque period, a unique artistic collection. This publication was edited as part of the Commemorations of the 5th Centenary of the Foundation of the Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Lisboa, marked in 1998.
