The Iconographic and Devotional Guide of the Church of São Roque of the Santa Casa da Misericórdia of Lisbon leads the reader through the aspects of Spirituality that inhabit this unique religious space, a singular monument in the context of Portuguese art. With this publication, the aim is to “help the visitor to explore the Church of São Roque, to find the strong spirituality that fills its space and to feel the Transcendence. Over nearly five centuries, the devotion of Men has enriched and sanctified this House of God. Here they came to honor the Lord, to ask Him and to thank Him, enriching this space with the deepest spirituality and the most beautiful Works of Art,” states Pedro Pestana Vasconcelos, Brother-Provider of the Brotherhood of Mercy. This publication brings together two important studies, one that focuses on each chapel and altar existing in the church, explaining the life of the saint whose image, painting, or relic it displays, and another that presents a historical description of the main devotions that have been practiced and the brotherhoods that have been in the Church of São Roque over time. A guide that directs the reader through the space of the Church of São Roque, but also through its history, saints, and devotions.
