In 2008, the Museu de São Roque received a proposal to donate the reliquary of São Francisco Xavier belonging to Casa de Nova Goa. The piece, seen only once in 1961, on the occasion of the imminent fall of the Portuguese State of India, had remained in the Castros family (counts of Nova Goa) since its conception, in the 1680s, by Goan goldsmiths. The piece was of undeniable value and its relationship with the holy founder of the Jesuits placed the Church and Museum of São Roque as the house that could best accommodate it. In December 2009, the reliquary vault was placed for the veneration of devotees for the first time and since then it has been one of the ex-libris of the oriental art collection of this museum. The ephemeris of the 10.O anniversary of the donation to Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Lisboa will be in 2019 and also coincides with the 4th.O centenary of the conception by André Reinoso of the pictorial cycle dedicated to the life of the saint, thus motivating an exhibition that links these two magnificent artistic expressions dedicated to Saint Francis Xavier, Apostle of the East.
