Catalog of the exhibition "Visitation. The Archive: memory and promise," which was held from July 10 to November 2, 2014, in the new exhibition gallery of the Museu de São Roque, in Lisbon. An initiative of the Historical Archive and the Culture Directorate of the Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Lisboa, it marked the inauguration of that space and sought, in the words of the institution's Culture Director, Maria Margarida Montenegro, to promote "the encounter between its secular history and contemporary art." Curated by Paulo Pires do Vale and featuring the collaboration of various creators and artists, including photographer Daniel Blaufuks, filmmaker Pedro Costa, composer João Madureira, and designer Filipe Alarcão, the exhibition explored the concept of "visitation" in a transversal way, through the perspectives of different arts. The catalog reflects this experience, traveling through the pieces that document the past of the Santa Casa - such as the signs of children from the Roda dos Expostos entrusted to the care of the Misericórdia or photographs related to the institution's work in health or social action, among others - and opens a window to the future, keeping the memory alive while subjecting it to the critical gaze of contemporary art. This volume contains four books with texts and an extensive visual reproduction of the exhibition pieces and also includes a CD with the original composition by João Madureira, dedicated to "Visitation."
