Collection of poetry by Delmira Maçãs, benefactor of the Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Lisboa, texts that convey deep feelings, born from her unique perception of the world and herself. “Oh, my eyes, so wide with astonishment, / that are closing upon the world,” writes the author. In this volume of the collection titled Miscellany, Delmira Maçãs shares with readers a set of poetic texts that express a whirlwind of sensitivities, hopes, and anxieties. “Lost, / forgotten / at a point / in the world, / so large / and so small, / the world, / so small / I, lost, / hidden / I,” concludes Delmira Maçãs. These writings of poetry reveal the benefactor of the Misericórdia de Lisboa, a complex and contradictory personality who found in the whiteness of the pages her most stimulating confidant. It was on paper that she meticulously recorded the daily life, as well as the anxieties felt from dawn to dusk of existence, a profound reflection scattered in numerous texts that she methodically preserved throughout her life. The books of Delmira Maçãs were published by the Santa Casa in 2009, in fulfillment of the testamentary charge stipulated by the benefactor to the Misericórdia de Lisboa, the institution she chose as her heir: the publication of her personal writings, of an autobiographical nature, but also of a religious and literary character. This is a set of 16 volumes, organized into three collections: Biographical Notes – Steps to Death, Dialogue with the Gospels, and Miscellany.
